Searching for music produced in Indonesia between the late 70s and early 90s is no easy task, and for multiple reasons. Firstly, most records were produced exclusively for radio stations in small quantities and without picture sleeves. Secondly, record stores in Indonesia generally don’t categorise their stock. Thirdly, most sleeves are coated in a thick layer of dust.
As far as I’m aware, the only tactic is to remember key names and listen to every record in every crate. So if you’re digging in Jakarta you’ll probably find yourself empty-handed with filthy clothing and buckled knees, contemplating another hobby – just like I was 3 months ago!
This is why I’m so impressed by what Merdi and Aat have achieved. For several years now, they’ve probed local shops and private collections to discover countless gems, and throw parties under the alias Diskoria, where they share their findings with friends and fans. This mix presents some slower and softer tracks from the Diskoria collection – music from the likes of Rien Djamain, Lydia Kandouw and Indra Lesmana among others.
